What Is English Checkers?

English Checkers is the classic version of checkers most familiar to players in the United States, the United Kingdom, and many English-speaking countries. It is also called American Checkers, Straight Checkers, or English Draughts.

The game is played on an 8x8 board using only the dark squares. Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the three rows closest to their side. The aim is to capture all opposing pieces or block the opponent so they have no legal move.

English Checkers is easy to learn because ordinary pieces move only one square diagonally forward. But the game becomes much deeper once forced captures, multi-jumps, sacrifices, and king play enter the position.

A Short History

English Checkers belongs to the larger draughts family, which developed from older board games such as Alquerque. Over time, different cultures created their own rules, board sizes, and capture systems. English Checkers became especially important in Britain and North America and has a long tournament tradition.

Because the rules are relatively simple, English Checkers became the default version for many casual players. It is often the first draughts game people learn as children.

Board and Setup

English Checkers uses an 8x8 board, 12 pieces per player, only the dark squares, ordinary pieces often called men, and kings created when a man reaches the farthest row. The board begins with two empty rows in the center. This gives both players space to develop before captures begin.

Basic Rules

A man moves diagonally forward by one square. If an enemy piece is directly diagonal and the square beyond it is empty, the man must jump over the enemy piece and capture it.

Captures are mandatory. If a player can jump, they cannot ignore the jump and make a quiet move. If another jump is available after the first capture, the same piece must continue jumping.

Kings and Captures

When a man reaches the farthest row, it becomes a king. In English Checkers, kings are still short-range pieces: they move one square diagonally, but they can move and capture both forward and backward.

How This Variant Differs from Other Checkers Games

English Checkers is more restrictive than many international variants. Men cannot capture backward. Kings are not flying kings. The board is smaller than International or Canadian Checkers. These limits make the game easier to understand but also make tempo, structure, and opposition very important.

Compared with Russian or Brazilian Checkers, English Checkers has fewer long-range tactical shots. Compared with Turkish Checkers, it uses diagonal movement instead of straight-line movement. Compared with Giveaway Checkers, the goal is normal: capture or block the opponent, not yourself.

Beginner Strategy Tips

Keep your back row strong early in the game. If you move all back-row pieces too quickly, your opponent may find an easy path to king. Use forced jumps as a weapon: sometimes the best move is a sacrifice that forces your opponent into a bad capture.

Try to control the center, but do not overextend. Trade pieces when you are ahead, and do not crown at any cost if the rest of your position becomes weak.

Who Should Play This Variant?

English Checkers is ideal for beginners, casual players, and anyone who wants a clean strategic game without too many special rules. It is also excellent for learning general checkers principles before moving into more complex variants.
